Doris Elaine Hecht, age 88, of Grand Haven, passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at a local care facility. She was born to the late Alexander and Minnie (Turk) Wernly on August 27, 1923 in Portland, Oregon. Doris graduated from St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in 1944 in Toledo, Ohio. She worked as a registered nurse at the Alden’s Mail Order House in Chicago, IL from 1944-1947. Doris married Frank Z. Roder on December 24, 1947 and had three wonderful children together. After raising her children, she worked as a registered nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw, MI until 1969. Doris then worked at Eaton Corp in Vassar, MI as an industrial nurse before retiring in 1986. She married Harold Hecht on May 9, 1981 in Richville, MI. He passed away on May 16, 1988. Doris was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Richville, MI. After moving to Grand Haven in 1993, she became a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and was actively involved in the Ladies Aid and OWLS. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her grandchildren.
Doris is survived by her daughter; Susan Grimaldi and former son-in-law Kevin Grimaldi of Saginaw, MI; sons: Frank (Sue) Roder of Grand Haven and Mike (Claudia) Roder of East Lansing, MI; eight grandchildren: Joshua, Christopher (Amy), Zachary (Kari), Jeffrey, Gregory, and Leah Roder; Nicholas and Katherine Grimaldi; one brother, John Wernly of Monroe, MI; and one nephew, Melvin Wernly.
The funeral service for Doris will be held on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Dieter Haupht officiating. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.
