Passed away on Monday morning, January 30, 2012 at St Mary’s of Michigan Hospital, Saginaw. Age 86 years. He was born on September 1, 1925 in Elsie.

He was first married to Marilyn Ostrander, he then married Betty Chalker on September 12, 1980 and she preceded him on September 5, 2004. Smitty served his country during WWII in the US Coast Guard. He retired from Peet Packing Company with 43 years of service and he had worked as a bartender for 30 years with Tom’s, Bob’s and Dave’s  Bar in Chesaning. He was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed hunting with his sons. He was an honorary member of the Bad River Bow Hunters Club.  He also was a Detroit Tigers Fan and enjoyed bowling and attending soft ball games.

Surviving is his 5 children;  Butch (Judie) Smith of St Charles, Bonnie ( Al Floate) Sprague of Owosso, Cliff (Pat) Smith of Chesaning, Jim (Darlene) Smith of St Charles and Bob Smith of Henderson; step daughter, Karen Thiel of Chesaning; 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Clara Perry and Effie Keck.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; daughter-in-law, Janet Smith; step son, Daniel Chalker; 3 grandchildren and a great grandchild; 3 brothers, Don, Jim and Lloyd; 1 sister, Elizabeth Snyder; 2 half brothers, Lamont and Clarence Coleman.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Walker-Martin funeral Home, Chesaning.  Rollin Tanney will officiate with burial in Wildwood Cemetery.
