Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend left this world February 18, 2012 at Hoyt Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Saginaw. Age 82 years. Harold died peacefully following a brief illness surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 19, 1929 in Flint, Michigan, the son of the late Carmon and Pearl (Ruby) Newman. He married Rosemary O’Toole on October 21, 1949. She survives him. Harold proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp., enlisting toward the end of WWII at the age of 17. He returned to Clare High School on leave and graduated with his class in uniform. He was honorably discharged at the rank of buck sergeant. Harold was employed at Saginaw Steering Gear for more than 35 years. His long career included positions as a journeyman toolmaker, general foreman in the Model Shop (Dept. 16), and an overseas assignment in Korea. He was especially proud of his role in the development of tilt wheel steering. Harold enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly in the out-of-doors. He was an accomplished musician, playing harmonica from childhood completely by ear. He delighted and entertained friends and family throughout his life with his music. In later years, he traveled widely with Rosemary in their motor home finally residing in East Tawas, MI and Fulton, Texas, and considered both “home”. Harold was an animated story teller, and all will miss his crooked, boyish grin. In addition to his wife Rosemary, Harold leaves six children, Todd (Sue) Newman, Kimberly (William) Vance, Mark (Dorene) Newman, all of Saginaw; Susan (Robert) Sajdak, Clarkston; James (Lisa) Newman, North Little Rock, Arkansas;  Lynne (Kent) Adams, Katy, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Albert (Julius) Lazar; one brother, Gene Newman; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law;  many nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by one sister, Wanda Burdt and also by a beautiful granddaughter, Kelly Adams. She was awaiting his arrival in heaven. Harold’s family would especially like to thank the loving and caring staff of Hoyt Nursing Home for the wonderful care given to him. He loved all of you!

 Funeral Liturgy will take place 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church where Harold was a charter member. Rev. Fr. James R. Carlson will officiate. Burial will take place in St. Andrew Cemetery with Military Services conducted by American Legion Post # 439. Friends may call at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd. (between Shattuck and McCarty) where the family will be present on Monday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday at St. John Vianney Catholic Church from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass. A Vigil Service will take place 7:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. John Vianney Catholic Church or Hoyt Nursing Home.
