Kenneth “Ward” DeKett, 92, of Vassar and formerly of Reese died early Friday morning, January 18, 2013 at his home.  He was born on November 10, 1920 in Harrisville, son of the late Sydney Roy and Nora Viola (Elmer) DeKett.  He worked in the CCC camps and joined the United States Army, serving overseas and was honorably discharged after WWII.  On October 25, 1947 he was united in marriage to the former Regina Helen Kreiner.  She preceded him on October 29, 1996.  They began their married life near Detroit, moved to Saginaw in 1948 and eventually settled in Reese in 1950.  Ward’s primary occupation was a Carpenter and woodworker.  He also farmed and owned and operated his own business, DeKett Garage Door Service.  He spent many happy hours as a woodworker and was most happy building items for his family and friends.  Ward was an active member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Reese and a past member of the Reese American Legion Post #139.  Surviving are his four sons, Sidney and Mary of Maryland, Ron and Nan of South Carolina, Jim and Denise of Vassar, Roger and Cynthia of Vermont; six daughters, Sue of Muskegon, Terri (Teresa) of Vassar, Ann and Ted Watters of Saginaw, Peggy and Jim Bluer of Merrill, Mary and Brian Weiss of Vassar, Roberta and Farrell Spencer of Kawkawlin; sister, Margaret (Edgar) Gyde of Whitmore Lake; brother, Kenneth Roy DeKett and a niece, Ruth Ann Kinney.  In addition to his wife Regina, one son, Anthony (Tony) DeKett; sisters, Ruby Williams and Ruth DeKett; brother, Leonard Roy DeKett; step-mother and aunt, Bertha (Elmer, Pinder) DeKett all predeceased Ward.  The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 22, 2013 from the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Reese.  Father Robert H. Byrne will officiate with burial in the church cemetery.  Ward’s family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 9940 Saginaw Street, Reese on Monday from 2-8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from10:00 a.m. until the time of the liturgy.  Ward’s family will pray the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral Home.  Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church or School or Hospice.
