Campbell, Betty M.
Betty M. Campbell, 92, of Freeland left her earthly home for her heavenly home on February 8, 2013 at her care facility, Nottingham Place, Midland. Betty was born on March 11, 1920 to Nels and Bessie Peterson, in Midland. She graduated from Midland High School and worked as a secretary for the Dow Chemical engineering department from 1938 – 1943.
Betty Peterson married Floyd Campbell on October 12, 1943 in Midland. They were together while Floyd served stateside in WW II. Betty has been active in the Methodist Church for over 75 years. She loved the outdoors, was a Girl Scout, a Girl Scout Leader and Leadership Trainer. She belonged to Freeland Mothers Club, Methodist Women’s organization, and worked, with Floyd, on several NOMAD projects in MI and the Eastern US. Betty and Floyd loved Elderhostel and other learning programs; their travels took them to the Holy Land, Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, and the Galapagos Islands.
Betty was the consummate hostess, a terrific cook and baker. She always had a fresh, homemade cookie or sweet roll to offer guests. Her pies, pecan rolls and candies were incredible. She had a big heart for others. She took in several short term exchange students over the years, and one became her son’s best man. She employed migrant workers in her gardens when they had no work in the sugar beet fields. She was always ready to help others in need.
Most of all, Betty loved her family and friends (many unrelated children called her “Aunt Betty”). Betty was the second of 8 children. She is predeceased by 3 brothers: John, Nels Jr., and Robert Peterson, and two sisters: Alice Freer and Joy Latoski. Betty is survived by two sisters: Alma Fitzgibbon and Mary Seeburger; her husband of 69 years, Floyd; their son David and wife Debra, of Seattle; two grandchildren Jennifer and husband Tony Barnard, of Anchorage, AK; and Jonathan and wife Christina, of Denver; four great grand children: Elias and Savannah Barnard, and Greta and Erika Campbell; and countless nieces and nephews.
