Donald Raymond Borg

A resident of Tawas since 2001, Donald Raymond Borg, 93, was born in Ludington, Michigan, and one of seven children to Finnish immigrants Herman and Amanda Charlotta (Hassel) Borg.  After graduating from Ludington HS he worked a variety of jobs in Ludington and Detroit until he enrolled at Central Michigan University. In 1940, while performing together in the CMU Acappella Choir, he met his wife Beatrice (Lane) Borg. They married on June 26, 1943, and were together for 66 years until her passing in 2009. 
 
Donald earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1942 from Central Michigan University and upon graduating joined the U.S. Navy V-7 officer’s training program at Columbia University, NY, and U.S. Naval Academy Communications School at Annapolis, MD.  He was assigned to various ships during World War II including the USS Augusta, USS New Jersey and USS Saidor.
 
While completing his Masters in Music at Michigan Sate University, Donald served as Band Director for Cass City Public Schools.  His passion for singing continued when he moved to Saginaw in 1952 and taught vocal music at North Intermediate and Saginaw High.  In 1964 he joined Bridgeport Spaulding Community Schools as the Director of the Instructional Materials Center.  After seven years he moved to the Saginaw Intermediate School District as the Audio Visual Materials and Graphic Arts Consultant.
 
Don continued to perform for more than 40 years with his wife singing duets in church, weddings, rotary clubs, and retirement communities.  He was also an avid golfer, having played in several Pro-Am tournaments. His talent in photography was also well known in Vassar, where he had a studio and enjoyed taking pictures of family and friends.  He will be remembered for his wonderful tenor voice, love of music, his dedication to his family, and his joyful spirit.
 
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice; brothers Martin, Edwin, and Ivar; sisters Helga Hodges, Mildred Nystrom, and Martha Swanson.
 
Don was a member of Professional Photographers of America, Kiwanis Club, Saginaw County Association of Retired School Personnel and a Paul Harris Fellow in the Vassar Rotary Club for 20 years. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church of Vassar, Warren Avenue Presbyterian Church and the Tawas Area Presbyterian Church.
 
He is survived by his daughter Miriam (Edward) Mangus, of Whittemore; son Raymond (Wendy Wilbur) of Syracuse, NY; sister-in-law Suzanne Lane, Vassar; grandchildren Susan Borg Elam, Vandalia, OH, Brian (Emily) Borg, Trophy Club, TX, their mother Barbara Borg, Roanoke, TX; Donald (Rachel) Mangus, Ypsilanti; Chris Mangus, Bay City; and great-grandchildren Benjamin Borg, Trophy Club, TX; Rachael, Mattison and Gerron Elam, Vandalia, OH.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, June 26th at 1pm at the Tawas Area Presbyterian Church, 2095 E. US-23 at Aulerich Rd., East Tawas, Michigan.  In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Tawas Presbyterian Church or to the family to go into an educational fund in Donald’s name.   Funeral arrangements were made by the Buresh & Kobs Funeral Home in Tawas City, Michigan.  Please share your thoughts and memories at www.bureshfuneralhomes.com
