Saginaw, Michigan.
Beloved father and grandfather passed away Sunday, September 5, 2010 at his home. Age 71 years. The son of the late Carl and Martha (Junemann) Simmet, John was born on December 1, 1938 in Saginaw, Michigan. John attended Indiantown Grade School and was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School. He was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral. John served his country proudly in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Leyte and U.S.S. Intrepid as a gunners mate. He was employed as a truck driver for Super Foods until his retirement in 1998. John also worked with his father on the family farm. He was a very avid gardener and was proud of the “fruits of his labor”; apples, lilies, walnuts, grapes and pumpkins. For a big portion of John’s life he raised poultry and waterfowl and had several grand champion call birds. John was a lifetime member of National Call Duck Breeders Association and Michigan Poultry Fanciers. In the latter part of his life formed MJ Waterfowl with his cousin Matthew Boensch. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #4232. John enjoyed fishing, cards, sudoku, casinos, walking at the mall, biking, world traveling, camping, but most of all spending time with his family and developing special relationships with his grandchildren.
Surviving are four children, John J. Simmet, Jr; Marie (Bren) Hartman; Julie (Michael) Burtch, Jennifer (Joel) Ray; their mother, Romaine Simmet; 12 grandchildren, Sean (Samantha) Hartman, Ian Hartman; Ryan and Sara Koch; Hunter; Taylor, Courtney, Maya and Braden Burtch; Hayden, Holly and Garret Ray; three sisters and one brother, Mary Ann Bauer, Dorothy (Jerry) Busch, Stephen (Elaine) Simmet and Alice Jackson; friend, Betty Bobay. John was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Nathan Bauer and Daniel Jackson.
Honoring Mr. Simmet’s wishes cremation has taken place. Funeral Liturgy will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 11, 2010 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Rev. Fr. Thomas McNamara will officiate. Friends may call at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd., (between Shattuck and McCarty) where the family will be present on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday at the Cathedral from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. There will be a Vigil Service 6:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the wishes of the family.
